A favourite teaching of mine on attachment and loving relationships is related to the stages describes loving with attachment as holding a coin tightly in the palm of your hand, fingers grasped around it, with palm facing down. When the grasp is released, the coin falls to the floor and is lost. Loving without attachment is like holding the coin in the palm of the hand, fingers open, with palm facing upward. There is no need to grasp, and there is no need to fear the loss of the coin, as it will remain in the palm without effort. Grasping at anything is wasted effort, at best. Attachment to people, things, feelings, money, even future plans is detrimental and inhibits the state of calm abiding we all desire.
