The insight that psychiatry has contributed to the spiritual journey is that most of our problems are unconscious. We may, for instance, be very generous in offering our services for a party and to bring food, while in actual fact we're more interested in the approval of the guest…. The real question is, what is your real motive for doing this? Even religious practices can have mixed motivation as is clear in many of the sayings of Jesus that address the human tendency to look for congratulations for our good behaviour and generous religious observances such as fasting or giving alms. Obviously these are good deeds and we shouldn't stop doing them, but we shouldn't do them for the motive of obtaining approval and esteem.
